Tonight we learned that My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy wasn’t nominated for Album of the Year. You know, the one that topped most album of the year lists. The one that got a 10 from Pitchfork. The one that topped Rolling Stone’s albums of 2010 list. The one that is currently sitting with a 94 score on Metacritic, making it on of the top 20 highest rated album releases on the site. Yup, that one. According to the Grammys, this piece of work wasn’t worthy of a nomination.
They gave Bruno Mars and Rihanna’s lack luster albums a nod instead. Congrats to the top 40. I’m not at all convinced the Foo Fighters or Lady Gaga belong on that list either. Adele does. And let’s hope she wins, because like Kanye, she put out a rather remarkable piece of work. Adele vs. Kanye AOTY match up would have actually been interesting, but instead the category is boring. Adele is sure to win, and if she doesn’t we should all riot in the streets.
Yes, I realize I am complaining even though Kanye actually leads in nominations this year overall. But that’s not the point. The Grammys do something like this every year, so no, in that respect it’s not a surprise at all. It’s certainly not surprising they would snub a rap album—if you even want to call it that, it’s debatable. It’s just disappointing. It is what it is. I am comforted by the disbelief I see coming from multiple sources. I’ve been told MBTDF and other Kanye topics are trending on Twitter. LA times, Billboard, USA Today, etc, are all also asking where his nomination for album of the year is and expressing shock that he was left out.
Congrats to Kanye for racking up the nominations in other categories for both his albums. There has been no shortage of praise for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and it’s a shame the Grammys didn’t see fit to recognize it’s full impact.
Here are his nominations anyway:
Song of the Year - All of the Lights
Best Rap Performance - Otis
Best Rap/Sung Collaboration - All of the Lights
Best Rap Song - All of the Lights
Best Rap Song - Otis
Best Rap Album - WTT
Best Rap Album - MBDTF
Best Recording Package - WTTGood luck. At this rate, he’ll need it.
Might not have been expecting him to win, but he should have gotten a nomination at the least. If he doesn’t win Best Rap Album for MBDTF, I’ll no longer care for any award shows.
